VMware removes the “penalty” on more server RAM and cores

From June 16~17, 2001. Green Island, 綠島
Yes! No more limits on RAM and processor cores!

We used to put as much RAM as possible on hardware servers running VMware vSphere. This is because VMware only charges on the number of processors before vSphere 5. As long as the number of processor is not changed, no matter how much size of RAM, and how many processor cores are installed, the license price is exactly the same.

However, upon the release of vSphere 5 last year, VMware changed their license pricing to also charge on the amount of RAM and processor cores. That is, more RAM or more cores will cost more money on vSphere licenses. That’s why I call it the “penalty” on the size of server RAM and the number of cores.

Here is the good news.

On August 27 in VMworld 2012, VMware officially removes such additional license costs.

This information is also updated on their pricing document, Page 3.

No Limits on Physical Resources

VMware vSphere 5 licensing removes all restrictions on physical cores and physical RAM. This change eliminates barriers to deploying VMware vSphere on new multicore server configurations, improving customers' ability to choose server hardware that best meets their requirements.

When we design Cisco UCS solutions, we can now add as much RAM as possible, again.

Happy virtualization!
